Temperatures are soaring; the heat is getting almost unbearable. No one even wants to step out of their air-conditioned cars and homes/offices. What’s worse about the summer here in Dubai, if you don’t continuously hydrate yourself you can be in deep trouble. It’s not uncommon to hear of people in Dubai suffer from Heatstroke’s, which we all know isn’t a good thing.

It is so important to hydrate yourself in the summer ESPECIALLY in the Dubai summers which is not at all forgiving. Most importantly, as much as we need to feel cool on the outside, you need to cool the insides of your body down as well with naturally cooling foods. One of the easiest ways to do that is by drinking water/fresh juice with bloomed basil seeds mixed in it. Basil seeds, also known as subja or tukmariya locally, are an excellent body cooler and they can also aid in digestion and relieve constipation. You can find these in your local Asian shops, and for us Dubai folks, it’s found in almost very big supermarket. My fellow Indians will know subja/basil seeds as the “small jelly like small seeds” in falooda. Ring a bell??
Well, I am not using Basil seeds in my recipe today, but you can if you want to. What I have for you today is a healthy, quick and easy (as always) summer cooler; Watermelon Cucumber Mint lemonade.
I did not use any sweetener in my lemonade, as the watermelon was naturally sweet. But you can use sugar or raw sugar/honey if you need some sweetness. All ingredients used are healthy, with cucumbers and watermelons being foods that are cooling as well.
I used my new NutriBullet to make this super tasty lemonade. The NutriBullet was an investment which was absolutely worth the cost. It costed just about AED 370 (a little over $100). Any smoothie/shake/drink can be put together in seconds. Definitely a P2P recommended product.

Getting right to the recipe then.
- ⅓ large watermelon
- 2 cucumbers (depending on how much of a cucumber flavor you like)
- 1 small bunch of fresh mint leaves
- ¼ cup raw sugar/2 tbsp sugar/Honey, as desired (Optional)
- ½ cup fresh lemon juice
- Deseed the watermelon. Puree the cucumber, mint and watermelon in a blender.
- Strain through a sieve to get rid of the pulp and the mint leaves. Pour over ice in a pitcher.
- Pour the fresh lemon juice into the pitcher and stir well. Add slices of cucumber, whole mint leaves and chunks of deseeded watermelon.
- Serve cold
